Religious Education in State Schools
Special Religious Education (S.R.E.)
Parish Co-ordinator Mrs Maryann Hughes
The role of the Catechist is to evangelise, which should ideally lead to Catechesis.
Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (C.C.D.)
As Catechists we facilitate this vital role of the parish whose aim is to bring religious education to Catholic children attending our local state schools and whose numbers range between 900 and 1,000 each year.
To achieve this role, a group of parents volunteer their time each week to teach and share with these children Gods love for us all.
Through our own faith journey we are able to bring together our lived experience of God, enabling the children to make their own connections between the Christian message and the world in which they live.
Catechists in our parish, both teaching and helping, receive training, inservicing and opportunities to participate in reflection days, as a source of encouragement, arranged by C.C.D. personnel, as well as our own parish team. We have meetings at least once a term to plan for the months ahead, to keep in touch with each other and to find out how things are going.
The Joy for Living Programme is a comprehensive primary school programme covering all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. The lessons are designed to include three essential steps providing opportunities for the children to make the abovementioned links: Exploring Life, making the link with faith with the help of the New and Old Testament stories and a Childrens Response in the form of discussion, prayer, song and other activities.
KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON JESUS AND YOU CANT GO WRONG
The State Schools which receive S.R.E. in our parish are Banks Drive, Blackwell, St Clair, Clairgate and James Erskine Public Schools (see below for days and times of classes). Each lesson is half an hour in length, once a week.
