Sacramental Programmes for Children
sacramentalprogramme

The preparation of children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession), Confirmation and First Eucharist (Holy Communion) is a parish based and family centred process, here at Holy Spirit Parish.

We encourage and nurture parents in the preparation of their children through small Home Groups. At these sessions, parents are encouraged to share their faith with their children and other members of the group. This is an excellent way for the children to see Christ’s love alive and working through each one of us.

There have been some recent changes proposed by Bishop Anthony Fisher OP concerning those who have enrolled for the Sacraments of Initiation August, 2010

Effective from January, 2011 there will be a new Sacramental Program for our diocese.

  1. From 2011 catechesis on the Sacrament of Penance and celebration of First Reconciliation will take place at age 7 or 8.
  2. From 2011 catechesis on the Mass and the Sacrament of the Eucharist and reception of First Holy Communion will take place in the following year, at age 8 or 9. (He notes: Emphasis should be given to the Eucharist as the 'summit' iof Christian inititaion, as of all Christian life, even if it is chronologically prior to Confirmation)
  3. From 2011 catechesis on the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place and be followed by reception of the Sacrament at age 10 or 11.
  4. First Holy Communion and Confirmation will take place in Mass.

This will mean a re-structure in the way that our program is run. When we are certain of how we will plan around the new model, we will inform you in due course. We ask for your prayers as we journey forward.

Children over the age of 7 or so, who are seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist would normally participate in a special process, called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children. (R.C.I.C.)

Adults who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church are involved in a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. (R.C.I.A.)
